Norma is Bellini’s best opera because in this one the music is most important. The story takes place in Gaul during the Roman occupation. Pollione, a Roman, has abandoned the Gallic high priest Norma and both her children to continue living with another high priestess, Adalgisa.
When Norma discovers Pollione’s infidelity, she wants to kill her children, but shrinks from doing so. Adalgisa begs Pollione to return to Norma, but fails. Norma then unleashes a war between the Gauls and the Romans, a conflict that leads to the capture of Pollione who is sentenced to death. Because Norma still loves him, she sacrifices her life for his and climbs onto the funeral pyre where Pollione joins her.
Bellini composed a lyrical drama that finally develops into a true tragedy in the second act. His mastery is evident in the beautiful melodies, as in the bel canto arias and duets.
This recording of Callas is a textbook example of truly theatrical singing in which the dramatic moments are balanced with moments full of introspection.
