Why music and philosophy?
The concept that philosophy represents the highest form of music is not directly quoted from a well-known philosopher using that exact wording. However, it aligns closely with the ideas of Pythagoras and Plato, especially within their philosophical schools, which connected music, mathematics, and the cosmos to deep philosophical inquiry.
- Pythagoras is famous for his concept of the “music of the spheres,” which suggests that celestial bodies move according to mathematical ratios that create a form of cosmic music. This music is not perceived by the ears but rather understood by the mind. Music is not merely an art form; it serves as a pathway to understanding harmony, order, and the soul, much like philosophy does.
- Plato. In “The Republic” and “Timaeus,” Plato explores the harmony between the soul and the cosmos, showing the influence of Pythagorean thought. He viewed philosophy as a way to align the soul with reason and truth, much like music tunes an instrument. Although Plato may not have explicitly stated that “philosophy is the highest form of music,” he regarded both philosophy and music as deeply interconnected disciplines in the pursuit of truth and the good.
- Boethius was a Roman philosopher influenced by Plato and Pythagoras. His philosophical approach placed music within a metaphysical and ethical context, linking it to the soul and reason.
Mozart is my hippie-hero!
I always dreamed of going to the music conservatory, this didn’t happen and ever I since got skilled in making contacts and creating dialogues, explaining theories and concepts. My musical interests are, classical and seventies pop music. In literature, I prefer reading classics and philosophical stories. (Roel Arnold)
